  • The 2025 edition of Chief Science Advisers’ Roundtable (CSAR) with a focus on “Equity-based Science, Technology and Innovation for Inclusive Human Development and Global Sustainability”, convened under the South Africa’s G20 Presidency, on 21 September 2025, in Pretoria, South Africa.
  • The Department of Science, Technology and Innovation (DSTI), in collaboration with its entity, the National Advisory Council on Innovation (NACI), hosted the G20-CSAR 2025.
  • The roundtable discussed the three key priority areas:

    ⇒ The development and promotion of a global STI agenda to support the implementation of the SDGs and enable a just, equitable and inclusive energy transition
    ⇒ Towards a global knowledge system that is equitable and open to all
    ⇒ Leveraging G20 STI initiatives to strengthen STI capacity-building initiatives in Africa and the developing countries.

Chief Science Advisers’ Roundtable (CSAR)

The Chief Science Advisers’ Roundtable (CSAR) is a global initiative that brings together chief science advisers (CSAs) and their equivalents from G20 countries and invited nations to collaboratively address pressing policy challenges. It was conceptualized and launched in 2023 under India’s G20 Presidency.

Objectives:

CSAR operates as a platform for discussion and development of common frameworks on global science and technology (S&T) policy issues. Its key goals include:

  • Providing evidence-driven science advice to inform policy decisions.
  • Creating effective mechanisms for dialogue and cooperation on transboundary issues like climate change, health crises, and biodiversity loss.
  • Promoting inclusivity, equity, and accessibility within the global S&T ecosystem.

 

Events and hosting:

2023 (India’s G20 Presidency):

  • Initial Meetings: The first high-level G20-CSAR meeting was held in Ramnagar, Uttarakhand, in March, followed by a final meeting in Gandhinagar, Gujarat, in August.
  • Key Outcomes: The discussions led to an agreement to create an institutional mechanism for continuous global S&T policy dialogue.

2024 (Hosted by India and UNESCO)

  • Location: Paris, France.
  • Theme: “Fostering open science, bridging knowledge asymmetry, and building science advice capacity globally”.

2025 (South Africa’s G20 Presidency)

  • Location: Pretoria, South Africa.
  • Theme: “Equity-based Science, Technology and Innovation for Inclusive Human Development and Global Sustainability”.
