Widespread protests in Nepal were triggered by the government’s ban on social media platforms and were fueled by long-standing anger over government corruption, nepotism, and poor economic conditions. Led primarily by young people, the “Gen Z” protests grew rapidly and led to the resignation of Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli and other ministers on September 9, 2025.

What are the main reasons for the protests?
  • Social media ban
The immediate spark for the demonstrations was the government’s shutdown of 26 major social media platforms on September 4, including Facebook, X (formerly Twitter), and YouTube.
  • Government graft: Protesters expressed deep frustration over systemic corruption, citing high-profile cases of embezzlement, such as millions of dollars disappearing from the construction of Pokhara’s international airport.
  • “Nepo Kids” trend: An online trend had gained traction, highlighting the lavish lifestyles of politicians’ children (dubbed “nepo kids”) and contrasting their wealth with the daily struggles of ordinary Nepalis.
  • Political instability
Since the monarchy was abolished in 2008, Nepal has had a succession of unstable governments, and the recent power-sharing arrangements were perceived by many as a self-serving “game of thrones”. The resignation of the prime minister and other ministers further plunged the country into political uncertainty.
